Manou + Matt’s Beach Maternity Shoot at Whale Bay

Whale Bay is one of those locations that just works beautifully for maternity sessions, and Manou and Matt’s evening there was a perfect example.

We started with a relaxed, everyday look – jeans and a cute knit top – which felt perfect for easing into the session and letting two-year-old Stefanos lead the way. Whale Bay is brilliant when you’ve got little ones who don’t want to stand still. Between the rocks, the pōhutukawas and the endless things to explore, we simply followed Stefanos on his mini adventures, focusing on natural, connected moments rather than any awkward posing. This approach keeps things easy for Mum and Dad to start with too and helps get rid of any nerves you might have.

You don’t need to worry about who does what and when though, I’ll guide you through the whole session and give you gentle guides and prompts so you always know what to do next. And I’ll look after pulling everyone in together for beautiful family shots as well.

Once the sun started dropping, we switched to a second look – a beautiful floaty dress from my client wardrobe that really came into its own with the backlight.

Whale Bay does have that 10-minute downhill walk to get there (and obviously a bit longer walk back up to the carpark afterwards). But the payoff once you get there – in terms of a location for your photos – is huge! In the evening we’re often rewarded with having the beach pretty much to ourselves, and on this night we did. The sun setting over the water (a rarity for east coast beaches) created the most gorgeous light.

Even though it was past Stefanos’ usual bedtime, the moment his feet hit the sand he got a second wind – which so often happens at beach sessions. Late sunsets, salty air, space to roam… it’s usually when the magic happens.

Make sure you bring them a post-session snack and pop in a favourite cuddly toy and their PJs. Then you can get them changed before you leave the beach and (fingers crossed), it’s an easy transfer into bed when you get home.

When to book your maternity session

I usually suggest we book you in for your maternity session at around 30 – 33 weeks. We want you to have a nice bump to show off, without feeling completely exhausted.
