This family session was meant to be at the beach. Mum and Dad’s two young adult daughters were home for the weekend, and we had everything lined up… except the weather. A big front was rolling in fast, and by mid-afternoon it was clear we were racing the clock.
So we made a call to switch plans and start earlier, photographing them at their family farm instead.
And honestly? It couldn’t have worked out better.
As it turned out, Mum had quietly been wondering if the farm might be the right place all along. It’s where their family story lives — years of memories, hard work, and time spent together. Choosing it gave the photos a depth that no “perfect beach at sunset” location probably ever could.

We dodged a few showers and spent the session chasing pockets of soft, flattering light. The woolshed became our refuge during the heavier rain, offering beautiful directional light and a classic farm backdrop.

Once the showers eased, we moved around the property — rustic old sheds, open spaces, and finally the driveway that welcomes them home every day.

This is a great reminder that great photos aren’t about perfect weather or trendy locations. They’re about light, connection, and meaning. When you only update your family photos every three or four years, choosing a place that’s special to you makes those images even more valuable over time.
After the session, Mum came around and together we designed a set of three framed images for her wall — a beautiful collection of a few of their favourite places on the farm.

Sometimes the best decision is the one that feels right. And sometimes, the most meaningful place is already waiting for you at home.
