A Relaxed Extended Family Session in the Bush

With family home from around the world for Christmas, this session was all about capturing everyone together — including four babies between 6 and 8 months old. With little ones involved, sunset wasn’t going to be ideal, so finding a location to suit a mid-afternoon timeframe was key.

Before the shoot, I scouted a few different locations and sent through photos so the family could see how each space might work. They were drawn to a more natural bush and stream setting rather than the more manicured park-like grounds. Our final choice turned out to be perfect — especially on a 30-degree afternoon, where the shade kept everyone cool and comfortable.

We met on a Saturday afternoon after the adults in the family had been out for lunch (highly recommend a couple of pre-shoot beers for any of the blokes who are not too keen on photos!) We took a short walk from the carpark to a beautiful spot under the trees beside the stream. We started with full group photos, then grandparents with grandchildren, followed by smaller family groupings and mini shoots for each family.

Once the main photos were done, we finished with more candid moments of everyone spending time together. For me this is where the magic happens with cousins, aunties, uncles and grandparents all getting to enjoy some time together. During this time, I will gently direct you through some activities and then let the special moments of interaction unfold.

This was one of those super cute moments between cousins!

Their feedback afterwards said it all: “Thank you for today, we had an absolute blast. We all thought you did an amazing job at controlling our crowd!” And when they received their gallery “There are so many golden nuggets in there!

Getting your family together and thinking of having some family photos? Why not make it a fun family outing instead of a stiff and formal “thing” that no-one is going to enjoy.
