The Waipu Coastal Walkway Track is a perfect option for families with kids over about 6yrs. The track offers stunning views and a fun challenge, all while keeping them off their devices and engaged with the outdoors.
What to Expect
The Waipu Coastal Track is really well maintained and is an easy-to-moderate hike that takes you along a beautiful stretch of Northland’s coastline. It took us about an hour to walk to the end and then turn around and walk back again (our kids were teens so might take a bit longer with younger kids). You can do a loop and come back on the road but I wouldn’t recommend that if you are taking the kids.
It’s a great way to get the kids moving and exploring, but it’s good to keep in mind, there are some steep, unfenced drop-offs, so it’s best suited for children aged about 6yrs and older who are confident on uneven terrain. Be sure to keep a close eye on them near the edges!
One of the highlights of the track is the incredible pancake rocks—rock formations that look like stacked pancakes, making for great photo ops and a perfect spot for kids to explore. While the track does have a few stairs, there’s not too many, so it’s manageable for younger hikers.
Tidal Timing
To make the most of your adventure, plan your hike around low tide. At the south end of Waipu Cove Beach, there’s a small stream that you’ll need to cross. When the tide’s low, it’s easy to hop across, but at high tide, you might find your feet getting wet. Alternatively, you can always take your shoes off and wade through—but either way, it’s part of the fun!

Along the way, you’ll be treated to some breathtaking views of the coastline, with the waves crashing below and the lush greenery surrounding you. It’s a great chance to stop, take in the scenery, and let your kids marvel at nature.
And after the hike, reward the family with a visit to The Cove Cafe—perfect for grabbing an ice cream or coffee while the kids play on the beach. It’s the ideal spot to wind down after your adventure.
